Subaru Fuel Pump Recommendations
Hi all,
Can anyone recommend a suitable inline fuel pump for a Subaru 3.0 H6 engine conversion? The pump has packed up and I can't identify what is currently on it - no branding or numbers etc. The engine is from a 2001 Legacy Outback - 3ltr H6. Ebay and Amazon have cheap universal ones which are supposedly compatible but all mention only the standard 2.5 rather than 3.0 engine. How specific do I need to be here about matching original pressure/flow rates for this engine? - Do you think the cheaper ones would do the job or do I need to be looking for something with higher specs?
Any advice appreciated and if anyone can point me towards something suitable that would be great.
Thanks.

Re: Subaru Fuel Pump Recommendations
I'm not sure about the 3.0, but importcarparts do all OEM Subaru parts and is very reliable. I'd email them and ask, or just use the parts lookup to see what's stock.
For our 2.0 we use the stock VW 2.1 pump.

Re: Subaru Fuel Pump Recommendations
Thanks for the reply - I'll have a look at importcars. Just had replies from a couple of VW/Subaru conversion places and they're both saying just to get the cheap high pressure ones off ebay/amazon. I think they're a replacement for the more expensive Bosch ones but according to them they'll do the trick (until they don't?!). They're cheap enough so might just try one and uprgade it sometime if it works.
By the way I think you might have stopped to help me a couple of years ago just outside Ripon - I was stuck by the side of the road waiting for a tow truck!

Re: Subaru Fuel Pump Recommendations
Dont buy the cheap fuel pumps, they can be noisy, only use the Bosch pump for the VW 2.1 injection that Brickwerks have on their shop site.

Multsi - yes I've heard they're noisy. Will the bosch one work the same for the bigger 3.0 engine?

Re: Subaru Fuel Pump Recommendations
Have fitted plenty of cheap and expensive fuel pumps, providing there isolated correctly they are quiet, we fit these to conversions usually,

Don’t get any problems with them at all,
I’m currently using one on my 2.0 Subaru, and don’t plan to change it when I convert to 3.0 h6 shortly,

Re: Subaru Fuel Pump Recommendations
Both my vans have subaru 2.2 engines ,one has a cheap pump the other a genuine Bosch, both are mounted the same but the cheap one is really noisy, the genuine pump sounds nice and smooth, would never risk buying a cheap one again.

Re: Subaru Fuel Pump Recommendations
Thanks for all the input guys - seems there's a few that will do the job.
Out of interest what are your various setups regarding inline filters? As I'm changing the pump I will do this as well. I curently have the filter before the pump. I'm getting different info from the forum and other people I've spoken to. Some say filter before pump, some say after. Speaking to Richard from RJES yesterday and he said there should be no filter before or after the pump but strainer in the fuel tank (to avoid cavitation). SubaruSurgery says filter before pump. Many people on here saying after. Any thoughts about this?

Re: Subaru Fuel Pump Recommendations
Are you sure he said no fuel filter because he sells a filter and the information next to the photo says for use between the pump and the engine, i have done 3 RJES subaru conversions and they all had a filter after the fuel pump, have a look on his site at the fuel system section, An important thing is to have a fuel tank that is for the vw injection set up, Brickwerks sell them.

Re: Subaru Fuel Pump Recommendations
Perhaps I picked that up wrong from him - he didn't mention to put it after the pump but didn't specifically say not to. I'll have another look at the info he sent me. What is the purpose of putting the filter after the pump? I thought the point was to stop contaminants coming from the tank into the pump. A new tank was put in during the conversion which was done by the previous owner - not that long ago. I don't have any info on the tank but assume it's the right one.
