Are you running the internet connection sharing system on your PC? if so it sets the IP of your computer to 192.168.0.1, you will need to set your access point and your laptop to addresses in the same range, i.e. 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 also when setting up your laptop set the default gateway to 192.168.0.1 (i.e. the pc connected to the net)
not one of microsoft's clearest items I'm afraid.

from what I understand you are set up like this
(ignore the full stops this forum doesn't like white space)
............................switch---------access point--------laptop
...............................|
internet------------computer
a neater conection would be like this
internet-----router------switch------computer
......................................|
......................................access point--------laptop
OR
internet-----router/wireless switch------computer
..........................................|
..........................................-----------------laptop
let the router dish out the IPaddresses with DHCP. better than using your PC as a router, its more secure like this with a decent router, but would need a different bit of kit, in theory your set up SHOULD work but hey thats computers for you.
something like this would do you

assuming your ADSL broadband not bad for under £50
