Engine upgrade by busmiester
1.6 TD in van is pushing 190k miles, still runs but starting becoming a bit precarious. So booked in for vw 1.9 tdi variable vane turbo to be fitted by busmiester, probably October time.
question : any one has this done for that particular engine and what was your experience , post transplant ?
TIA

Re: Engine upgrade by busmiester
So, I’m guessing no one on here has had this done by busmiester. Or maybe my posts are just too boring for words.

I’d assume the former rather than the latter.
Not sure what you’re intending tbh - is the expectation that this will sort out your starting issues?

Re: Engine upgrade by busmiester
I know Busmeister aka Rob Fearn. He is the man behind T3Busmeet.
Rereading the post, OP is considering a 1.9Tdi conversion from a JX inc the variable turbo.
Must be loads of those around by now?

Re: Engine upgrade by busmiester
Looking to change engine due to miles on original jX 1.6 turbo, I would tolerate reluctant starting (it always does in the end), if it were not for worrying high miles, more than 200K now. There is always a nagging doubt in my mind, I.E. when will it just cave in. Best thing about busmiester swap is that it includes gearbox with cable change so finding a gear no longer a lottery.
my question in the O P was really asking what the driving experience is like after getting this particular conversion done
was hoping for some informed opinion from anyone who has had it done

Re: Engine upgrade by busmiester
Cable operated gear change suggests that the conversion includes a flipped Audi FWD transaxle?
From what I have heard, if you use all the TDI performance the (admittedly cheap to replace) tranmission doesn't last very long.

tks for that , as far as I know the engine and gearbox complete from various via group cars is used, no mention of an Audi awd gear box. It’s going to happen anyway later this year, so I will know soon enough. Thanks again

Re: Engine upgrade by busmiester
FWD = front wheel drive. It sounds like thats what they are offering.

Re: Engine upgrade by busmiester
sorry to sorta hijack the thread OP. I got a bud that needs a new diesel engine, (1.6td from a passat apparently, timing belt broke) just pulled it today, he wants a 1.9 so I assume a 1Y or AAZ is the easiest to just chuck in with the sump swap etc? or are there other engines that would be OK. Ive heard PD150 engines? but dont you have to swap to the mechanical pump? or am I getting crossed wires?
If there are any good recon specialists can buy one from if anyone knows that would be great

sorry, misread your post
assume you mean that gear box is turned thru 180 so unusual stresses when used that way ?
as I say it’s happening anyway , so I can always speak with Robin about it. I understand they have done a number of these conversions which seem to be preferred over the gti engine, probably because of fuel consumption reasons
keep the mask on and regards to tonto and scout

hard question to answer, there are numerous sources of VAG engines on line , but are they good? Not easy to know, the reason I went with busmiester and the 1.9 tdi is that they source a complete donor car , so the engine I end up with will (at least) have some degree of traceability (mileage/ donor car condition etc). More importantly a diy engine swap is well beyond me , lacking the mobility I once had due to old age.
also busmiester do have a good reputation, just wish they were a bit nearer to where I live, it will be 300 mile trip to drop it off

Re: Engine upgrade by busmiester
1Y N/A or AAZ T/D are the most common bolt in conversions, but it's getting harder to find good used examples of both, particularly the AAZ. If you get a 1Y with the right kind of block my understanding is that you can add a turbo to it, and the other option is a 1Z with mechanical pump (mTDi).
My understanding is that conversions to PD150, or other ECU TDi engines, require quite a bit more work and fewer of the JX ancilliaries can be used.
