1Y timing with adjustable pulley. New Video!!
Hi All,
I finally spent this weekend fitting the 1Y engine I have owned for a year to my bus.
It has all gone well but the engine sounds loose and clattery and seems to vibrate a bit more than my 1.6D did.
It starts fine, but has grey smoke for 10 secs or so after start up which then clears away. Took it for a run and pulls ok but the clatter noise is there all the time except from when on the overrun. Smoke wise when warm if you rev it you get a small amount of dark grey/black but nothing really excessive.
I'm worried there is something not right with it. Any ideas? Or are these engines supposed to be clattery?
Thanks.

A quick thought, random as it is ..if the engine maybe timing...if not the engine..support mounts!

T25 dreamer... Bet they would get loads of hits. '1Y v's 1Y who got the most noise'
carpmaster, I mean the engine sounds 'loose' internally with all the clattering. It could be the timing as I changed the belt before fitting the engine. If it was the timing would it not be a pig to start etc? Is there other symtoms of the timing being out I coulkd look for?
I've been reading through other threads relating to rough running, clattering etc and have found the first thing to try tomorrow is to bleed it all. I didn't bleed it exactly to get it going, all I did was remove the return pipe and hook up a bit of spare rubber hose and sucked the fuel through the pump. Am I right in thinking my loose and clattering sounds may be due to air in the system?

Re: 1Y fitted but sounds 'loose' and clatters??
Timing i would have thought.
Lock it all up and check it - and if it appears to be ok, then loosen the bolts on the pump and move the pump slightly - you will hear the improvement / degradation as you go along.
Of course the best way is to use the dial gauge to measure the exact pump timing - but the basics need setting up correctly first. If its a notch out it will sound like "pooh"...
Excuse me if im going over stuff you have already done...

Do what Ringo says, but before you do, crack each injector in turn (with the engine running) until there's plenty of diesel coming out - you can be sure then that there is no air in the system

Re: 1Y fitted but sounds 'loose' and clatters??
Thanks for all the suggestions guys!
I have now cracked the fuel pipes at the injectors whilst running and it now appears a little better. I still don't think it's right though, although it could be me being paranoid.
So, I've video'd the engine starting and running. I'm uploading it just now so will put the link up when it's done. Could you guys please have a watch and a listen and let me know what you think?
There is damned near no smoke from it at all now... as you'll see on the video.
Thanks to t25dreamer for the idea of doing a video!

Erm, sounds like a diesel to me.
Got the right oil in it?

So you reckon I'm being paranoid Ringo and it sounds pretty normal?
As for the oil... erm. cough. erm ... it's gtx magnatec 10/40 but not diesel specific. Reason being I wanted to run the van for a couple of days, make sure all was oil and water tight then give it an oil and filter change just in case there was any debris got into the engine whilst changing the sump etc the same day I stick the antifreeze in it.... and all I had in the garage was a full tub of magnatec.
You think it would actually quieten down a bit with the diesel oil in it?
I really didn't think the oil would matter that much, not for a couple of days anyway.

Lets wait for other peoples opinions first
Does it quieten down when warm?
Have you taken it for a very good blast?
The pump timing could still be out - its a quick job to adjust it:
Mark up the position of the pump now so you can return it to this position.
loosen the bolts behind the pump pulley wheel, start the engine, and then rotate the pump ever so slightly. Adjust until it sounds best. Ideally you should use a dial gauge but its worth a try.

It quietens down by a very small amount when warm, not by a great deal though.
It has been for a good blast, seems to pull ok. A bit more oomphh than the 1.6D but not a great amount more.
I'm being vague I know.
I don't think I can adjust my pump that way as it has 3 bolts on the pulley that need to be slackened first before the pump can be moved, or that is how I understand it? I don't have a dial indicator.
I'll set it up for TDC in the morning and see if it's at least where it should be.
