Wheel Scraping / knocking sound
Hey
I think the rear brake or bearing has something wrong, it's knocking (in time with the wheel spinning) There is no noise when the van doesn't move. Today it started happening then i touched the brake and it stopped, but that's not happening all the time.
Can anyone recommend a garage, SE London. The guy at quick fit said he didn't want to recommend anyone in Elephant and Castle!
Cheers

Might just be some debris trapped in the drum. Happened to me in Ireland a few years back - was a washer thingy which was a part of the bit that held the shoes level. Chock the vehicle, release the handbrake, remove the drum and have a look. DO NOT press the brake pedal with the drum removed.

A knackered or very dry CV joint can do this as it can hammer against the rear hub. Grab hold of the driveshaft and see if its making a similar noise if you move the shaft in and out (ie between gearbox and hub).

I think it's the bearing.. it only happens when you turn left and it's coming from the rear right...
now can anyone recommend a garage in London? South preferable, i'm new to the area..

Ok after much searching the only place i could find was Alan Day voltswagen.
I've got the replacement bearings from brickwerks but they are saying 2 and a half hours labour, because they have to do something with the driveshaft? £300+ !!

£300 for 2.5 hours
I better put my rates up.....
Rear bearing is a bit of a faff as the bearing housing has to come off.. which means removing brake backing plate, which means losening the brake cyl.. so you could be into a new wheel cyl, and brake pipe.. and depending on the backing plate condition...

Why bother with a VW specialist. Any monkey with a spanner can change a wheel bearing. I should know. I did it. Don't you have a local cheap backstreet garage somewhere that could sort it?

Hey
I thought it sounded cheap, i tried a VW service place in Brixton said he couldn't do it. the main dealer was the only people i could find.
Does anyone know a good garage in South London Elephant area? When i took it into quick fit the guy said he wouldn't want to recommend any garages round here!

Holy flip flops....
I just spent the day doing mine - took me 3 hours to do, driveshaft out, new CV new bearings and new wheel cylinder.
I did it without a Ramp... the worst bit is getting the hub nut off and the circlip out of the hub housing but ANY garage should be able to do that.
Having said that I wouldn't recommend anyone in Saaaaf London either - there used to be Big Boys Toys - but they royally ballsed up my Golf engine
For £600 I'd expect a lap dance and a personal service while I waited

Re: Wheel Scraping / knocking sound
I replaced the rear wheel bearings for quality from the brickwerks and was impressed by the quick delivery after placing the order. Annoyingly a scrapping noise developed soon after fitting gsf bearings. It took aprox 3 hours i noticed some wear in the hub & used bearing seal problem resolved.I dont no how others remove the bearing hub but my method is to undo only the inner gearbox end cv bolts & the four hub bolts. The drive shaft and hub can be pulled through the appature where its bolted to the rear suspension wish bone. This helps where access makes it difficult to undo the outer cv bolts once out with the drive shaft & hub they can be undone on a bench.
