Re: Rare but violent brake vibration

Thats scandalous. If you have basic tools its easy to do the wheel bearings. Noting the ping when you hit it home is the key and plenty of grease slobber.

Best to do both sides at the same time tbf.

I got mine from GSF last year at ridiculous cheap price about 12 quid a side (FAG).

There is no switched live. at the front
Best to take a feed from the back of the fuse box
or from the rear firewall black box in the engine bay.

Re: Leaky oil sump

Give the engine a good jet wash so you can find the leak. It will make working on the engine so much easier than dealing with all that sludgy mess.

Common for the orange seal under the dipstick guide to fail.

Coolant bleeding covered to death. Main bottle should be at the brim.

Re: Water pipes

you wouldn't want road debris puncturing a rubber hose. That wont happen with ss or plastic pipes.

Re: Water pipes

everyone went away from plastic moons ago because the metal in the plastic ends les to them breaking.

I put ss on my van 15 years ago and they are as good as new.

could well be the water pump is on its way out.
Might be worth getting the alternator refurbed - the bearings at least.

Plenty of vids online from gowesty.
you need a helper to thump window as you pull the seal over.

Re: Excessive (?) Smoke on startup 1.6TD JX with leaking K14 Turbo

Never a need for the cold start lever.
Dont rev the nuts off them on start up - not good for the turbo.
If you have a cylinder down then the fuel needs to burn.
Smoke on initial start up is a fort of the jx.

Re: Rust prevention and curing

Kurust is only good for surface rust healthy dose of primer and red oxide before painting, wet rust needs chopping out and new metal putting in. Filler should be avoided. A healthy spray of all cavities and underside with diluted waxoyl (white spirit) is well worth it. Done my entire van last summer...

One thing I have learned when working on the bus, when it annoys, when its testing you, tools down and give it a break.

If you carry on - ham fisting comes into play and something will break.
