More help needed!
I have 1987 1900, petrol which won’t idle.
Two very helpful members suggested that I replace the vac tubes from the carb to the distributor as my van kept cutting out on the run which I did.
It always starts first time and seems to idle okay on the drive but when driven after a short distance would cut out but restart okay and only run if I kept the revs up, their advice worked.
But now it drives great until I need to stop at a junction and tick over is required.
It will just not tick over when warm but will rev freely and also restart okay!
Any help great fully received.

So, did you find the issue with the vac pipes obvious ? Split pipe ? Missing pipe ?

Whilst you were checking the vac pipes, did you disturb the engine wiring ? The black wire to the idle cut off solenoid in the carb possibly ?

Check the inlet manifold. While it is idling ( carefully)get someone to spray some carb’ cleaner around it and see if the revs pick up.

Firstly many thanks Steve and Dave for coming back to me.

As suggested I removed the vac pipe from carb to distributer and blew through it and it appeared blocked, looking more closely it had a split so I replaced with new pipe and also the pipe from carb to air box.
This definitely improved the running once on the road so thank you Steve.

I was really careful when changing the pipes and definitely didn’t disturb anything else!

I will have to wait to buy some carb cleaner before trying Dave’s suggestion but until then if anything else comes to mind please let me know as for once the weather is looking pretty good for today.

I realise to those out there who have a vast knowledge of the mystical workings of the VW engine this next question will sound completely dumb but looking at the photo Steve has kindly sent would turning the idle adjuster shown in the picture help?
I don’t and haven’t touched it in case I make things worse!

NB. Carbs typically need a refurb. at least every 10 years.

Can anyone suggest a company that can carry out a refurbishment on the carb 2e3?

It hasn’t adjusted itself , So if it was oil, it wont be that ……
Rebuild kits are available from brickwerks …..
there are plenty of online articles of the setting up and working of the 2e3

Did you check for vacuum leaks as suggested?

Not had a chance to test with carb cleaner yet as the weather’s been crap, once I do and if this has an effect what would be my next step?

If it picks up revs instead of dying you have a leak at the inlet manifold and it will need the gasket replacing. Not a bad job to do.
This was what was causing my stalling on idle at junctions/ roundabouts.
It’s just one thing to rule out and takes a few minutes to check.

Update on the idle issue.
Used the carb cleaner idea which had no obvious effect so that helped to eliminate one possibility and prompted me to clean up the exterior of the carb, lightly oiled any moving parts and refitted the original rotor arm which I thought had been ditched along with the leads/cap etc.
It now idles and runs okay!

Mine has just started having the same problem, started ok this morning, went for a short drive and every time I came to a stop junction, lights etc it stalled and I had to restart it, got back to house and vehicle will not idle just keeps konking out unless I keep the accelerator pedal pressed. Hopefully tips above will aid me also. Any other pointers also welcomed.

UPDATE- added some Snake Oil to fuel, also noticed that butterfly flap in carburettor was partially open or partially closed, gave it a couple of pats to move and loosen it and left it in the full open position (vertical). Started engine and van now ticking over fine, not sure if the Snake Oil did the trick or the flap.

I’m back to square one again!
After a trip with no idle issues I obviously put the kiss of death on the problem by stating that all was well.
Glad you have solved you problem and sorry to sound dumb, what is snake oil?
