Voltage Stabilizer

My temperature and fuel gauge have just decided to stop working. Everything else seems to be working fine, so I'm assuming it's the voltage stabilizer.

I was having a read through some posts (and a couple of youtube videos) regarding the voltage stabilizer.
Most (including brickwerrks) say you need a T4 or aftermarket VS and to mount it upside down.

One YT video seems to say that you can get a LM2940T-10.0/NOPB Texas Instruments VS and mount it upwards. I'd prefer to mount an aftermarket VS upright, but thought I'd see what others have done first.

Anyone have any advise?

Cheers,
Hairy.

LM7810 is good for 1.5A whereas the LM2940T is only good for 1A.
Mounting an LM7810 upside down isn't difficult, all you have to do is ensure that there is a suitable heatsink provided.

Cheers Oldie, would you recommend the LM7810 Voltage Stabilizer then? I know virtually nothing about electronics.

What would you use for heatsink? Brickwerks say something about shaving down the old mounts for original VS so that newer chips fit properly too?

Just need a suitable thickness piece of aluminium, it provides contact for the heatsink as the 7810 is mounted with its back uppermost. You will see when you fit it.
Some years ago I found a source for the original chips - they were over £70 each! A 7810 can be had for 50p.

Stolen a pic from an old post, you can see it mounted upside down - you can't see a heatsink though so I presume that they didn't use one ( they should have done ) Ignore the finger as that was something else:

Cheers Aidan, what are the TCA 700Y regulators (I'm new to this)? Are they the standard T4 one's?

I spoke to Michael at Brickwerks this morning, he said they should have their T4 regulators back in next week.

Haven't you done it yet?

afaik TCA 700Y is the original voltage regulator made by ITT in France, certainly that's what is in the dash I have for spares, and if you look for that specific electronic component you'll find them for £60+ but there's a listing on German Ebay for them for £13 plus shipping, but the listing is visible on Ebay uk so should be possible to buy them, they are listed for VW/Audi dash units

Cheers Aidan, I think I've found the one's you mentioned on eBay. They certainly look more like the originals.

It is a bit more expensive, but if it means I can install it the correct way up and not need to melt/trim down some mounts, I am tempted.

Aidan sorted me out with a good used original VR and I got it installed this evening. Everything works perfect now.

I couldn't for the life of me uninstall the speedo cable though, so I basically had to install the VR blind! Do people sometimes glue these on? I watched a couple of videos on removal and they seemed to be easy to pop off when you squeeze the handles, no chance on mine. I almost ripped the back off the speedometer.
