PS I understand that the input shaft uses the same coupling spline as the VW 094, which is handy as the R25T uses a bigger spline, has a massive spigot bearing and is too short!
I need a petrol input shaft again...
It also runs inside a tube to prevent the diff flinging oil onto it and so winding oil out into the clutch, another nice detail (and the source of the rusty dust on the crownwheel, after I pulled the tube off)
Casting dates are '87, Renault had already gone to an electric speedo drive by then (the toothed wheel), but some vandal has cut the wire right back to the sensor

I attacked the (damaged) Renault V6 bellhousing with the bandsaw and then milled it down to a nominal 25mm thick, just for mocking up purposes:

This threw up what could be the first major snag:

I am going to need a reduction geared compact starter to clear the UN1 mounting flange!
Not the end of the world and 1.4 kW will make starting a lot easier.

I have a 93 Renault Espace TD sat outside awaiting some repairs. It shares a lot of R25 running gear and I'm begining to look at it a bit funny, if you know what I mean!

I think that only the V6 phase 1 & 2 had the UN1, others had the non-flippable NG series transaxle. I "bought" a 4-cyl phase 2 Espace in error off ebay once....

lives another day then! or year once it has an mot. Its a good car, galvanised space frame composite panels, mechanical td, its not going to die in a hurry.
Just the usual renault issues (though nowhere near as bad as more modern ones.

Hey ho, that which never was...
A bit like this engine project! I have been all over the bus-projekte webshop and they seem to sidestep the small matter of starter motors when it comes to buying their bellhousing adaptor plates for the T3 (petrol or diesel are available)
I have had a super-fast response from WOSP but having done a bit more measuring, I am concerned that even their tiny Denso starters will not clear the flange on the UN1
It's a royal PITA and I am not paying 850 yoyos for a UN1-to-EJ bellhousing, only to have to adapt that onto the 025 case!
Which brings me to the inevitable conclusion that I may have to pattern my own bellhousing and have one cast at our favourite foundry. One that puts the starter centrally above the transmission (not a problem in a 2wd) where it WILL clear; another option being to move the starter outwards a bit to allow a larger 240mm clutch from a quattro etc but this will need a new flywheel too.

A bit of lunchtime faffing about and then some after hours milling has brought about a likely solution:

The standard starter will just clear (the seam weld on the casing will need dressing off, that's how close it is) and a the solenoid wont interfere with all the 'charger stuff or the coolant hoses.

A bit of scrap perspex used to check the hole pitches taken from the remains of the bellhousing...

Looks like I got it right (hard to tell when they are cast-in oversize holes) but this many M10 bolts in 10mm holes can't be far out!

Slight aside! The desire (need?) for a "period" 80's dashboard featuring a speedo that will comfortably accommodate the calculated top speed (140 mph) combined with a chance ebay listing, turned up this little beauty for 25 quid.

A mod too far? I think it looks kind of "right"
The switchgear is all of the push button latching type (Disco 1 might be the same/similar), it needs a flippin good clean and I dont know if the tacho is from a V8 or a straight 6... come to think of it the speedo might be electric too. Must check that
