2.0 CU Starting issues.

Post by TheRealExile »

Hi,

T25 newbie here.

I have a 1980 T25 which currently isn't running, the previous owner told me it was the fuel pump as he'd had it running pouring petrol direct in the carbs.

It came with no battery 🙄 so I tried an old one I had lying around, had the Wife crank it with the fuel pipe disconnected from the carb, sure enough nothing.

This may seem a very novice question but where on earth is the fuel pump located? I can't see it in the engine bay!

Is it underneath somewhere?

Speaking of the battery, what is the correct type I need?

Either the battery I have doesn't have enough power or I have a lazy starter motor too as it turns but only slowly (as if the battery is flat, even though the charger says its fully charged)

The fuel pump is under the engine , just behind the o/s wheel kind of …if you are crawling under from the side ..
The correct battery should be a type 065 . However cleaning the earth strap that goes to the nose of the gearbox and the battery itself , and the main connections on to the starter motor may improve your cranking speed .

Hello,
.... and welcome to the world of Air-Cooled Bliss.. 8)

Here is a video that shows where the fuel pump is hidden:

From about 6 mins in...

Just get the replacement mechanical pump from Brickwerks, it is perfectly adequate.
Get new flexible fuel pipe and the filter just after the petrol tank( underneath offside), from them at the same time...
I think there is an 90/90 discount code.

Post up some engine bay pictures left, right, top, and underneath.

Cordialement,

:ok

Managed to get away from work for half an hour and it had finally stopped raining!

Fitted the new battery and added another can of super unleaded with some lead replacement additive.

Gave it another try, still seems to turn slowly, no fuel at the carb pipe. Tried sucking on the pipe to draw it through I was certainly getting fresh fumes but no fuel.

I take it the 2.0 CU needs the lead replacement?

Fuel pump I'm still waiting on, if no joy I'll give the earth a clean next.

Will my trolley jack and Axle stands be enough to safely hold this (2.5 ton rated, fine for my Capri) or do I need something a bit sturdier?

I did take some pictures of the engine bay, needs a good clean and de rust of tin work alongside some tired looking pipes! Underneath to come when I get a bit more time!

Don’t waste your hard earned on lead replacement snake oil, you dont need it , these engines were designed for 2star and have hardened valve seats …..

My first advice would be to check out sarran 1955 videos on YouTube, very informative. Then you can see what these engines are all about. It also looks like you have missing vacuum pipes and tin ware.
I really liked my 2.0l cu but eventually changed to a dirty diesel.

With the slow turning I'm thinking that earth strap might well need looking at, I'll have a proper look but if we need a new one where is best to source one from?
