Headlamp upgrade query - ensuring main beam dash light.

Post by PetenAli »

I'm just about to do the wiring / relay upgrade so that we have decent headlights at last before we set of for Shetland next week.  There's lots of useful info on here and I'm confident about doing it (I've done similar on two 70's Beetles with  good results).

I've just got one query which is which side do I need to pick the relay trigger feed up from so that the main beam warning light on the dash is activated?  There seems to be quite a bit of conflicting info about this on here, on You Tube etc.  Its an '87 Syncro and its left hand drive.

Thanks as ever,

Pete

Hi Pete, I did a write up on this after I did it a few years back. With the method I used the main beam warning light works as expected. Hopefully it might be of use: viewtopic.php?p=8286443#p8286443

Thanks very much scottie.  I am going to go a slightly different route although exactly the same principle - power will come direct from the battery although I may follow your idea of taking the triggers from the back of the fuse box rather than from nearer the actual headlights.  Basically I'm following this idea viewtopic.php?t=101326&sid=40f433475872 ... 0&start=15 (see California Dreamin post dated 27 April 2012).

As you'll see from this thread there is some debate about about which side to use for the trigger and it doesn't seem to get resolved - so my query still stands!

Thanks for getting back.

Thanks Mocki.  Its just occurred to me that I ought to be able to work it out from the wiring diagram in Bentley as this is for LHD.  Off to peruse...!

Sussed it!  Thanks to Bentley.  It definitely is the right hand side.  The white / black wire is the one that I want for the high beam trigger.  That £30 that I spent on the Bentley at Dubfreeze 25 years ago has repaid itself again (if only Bentleys were still £30!)

Thanks to the people who got back to this query.
