Inner sill bung holes

Post by neil3965 »

Can anyone tell me if the large holes in the AH Schofield inner sill (not present in the original sill) are there for ventilation, or do I need to get hold of some bungs to close them off once I have Dynaxed the insides?

Pics here — https://alanhschofield.com/ourparts/pro ... 01252.html

Many thanks
Cheers, Neil

It would suggest your sill has been done before. Those big holes are there from factory and usually have plastic bungs in them.

Thanks Adie, but I’m pretty sure the old sill is original — it had factory primer and factory spot welds on it.

Any idea where I can get hold of the bungs? Searched the internet to no avail...

Pretty sure I got some bungs for the sill off of eBay from some German seller. Expensive though. No idea if they would be the same as the ones you need though.

Thanks Swebby, nothing there. The holes are 36mm diameter, can’t even find generic bungs/blanking pieces to fit, let alone VW ones.

Leaving them open seems an invitation for road muck and salt to get in, welding them up a bit over the top. If no one has any ideas (3D printing?) I’ll keep looking for suitable bits of plastic!

The holes are factory and just covered with what looks like duck tape

After cavity waxing and thinking the same,
I have been wondering about using offcuts of my dodo mat sound deadener,
its really sticky bitumen coated flexible aluminium,
very easy to use and not tooo hard to remove when next waxing.
Will the mot tester think its covering a rust hole?...
I guess not if its cut neatly in regular shapes.

Would a 35mm blind grommet not do the job, for the round hole's?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Might look at using bitumen-backed foil...

Looks like the factory sills with holes are on later vans, maybe? Definitely no holes on my 1982 sills...

Thanks tobydog, those might fit, not cheap though!

I take it that’s the factory tape, davidoft1? What year is your van?

When I'm back at work (?), if you can wait, I could 3D print some for you....

I’ve been thinking about this and I think I may have a few holes I probable need to block, but would like to leave them assessable if need be (more jobs for the ever-growing list)
I think I may have a workable solution but don’t know until I get the van back (rough sketch below).
