I’m noticing on occasions my autobox gives a right old this when going into reverse.
It’s not all the time but I feel it’s becoming more frequent.
Only ever reverse though. Anyone else experience this ?
Oil level appears fine, although I’ve not checked the final drive oil, as I’m not sure how?
Any pointers?

Re: Auto box help
Not had that reverse problem with my auto so can't help on that one. Your final drive has a fill and a drain plug. Get your van on level ground undo the filler plug. The oil should be just below the lip. Best do a change if you have never done one. Make sure you can undo the filler before removing the drain plug.

Re: Auto box help
Thanks Rob
I’ve just changed the ATF & Final Drive oil. A messy but satisfying job.
I couldn’t help noticing that the Final Drive Oil was vary dark/reddish but the new oil was clear/colourless.
Fingers crossed there’s nothing serious around the corner.
All the forward gears transition quietly & smoothly. I just get what I feel is a un-graceful transition into reverse mist the time.

Re: Auto box help
I've had a lot of issue with may automatic gearboxes over the last couple of years and I'm sorry to say that the first manifestation of impending doom is the big shunt when putting it into reverse. The next sign that something major is going wrong is if it begins to stick in other gears. Dis the ATF look dark or smell burnt?

The ATF seemed ok but I was surprised of the colour of the Final Drive oil.
I guess I just need to suck it and see for now. You gotta love these VW’s !

Re: Auto box help
At least you found the final drive - some auto drivers don't know until its too late. It could run for quite a while with the reverse clunk without any other problems. If it begins to stick get it done. MIne failed on a really steep hill in crystal Palace with the family on board- it wasn't fun.
