Strange whine
Hello knowledgeable people. I would like to pick your brains about the potential cause of an intermittent whine when driving, that is increasing in frequency. It's a whine not grinding noise
No pulling to one side,
The breaks don't seem to be affected.
It sounds like it's under the front of the van?
Someone suggested the heater fan, but taking it out yesterday without the fan on it still happened.
Can anyone give me any pointers?
Thank you in advance
Karen

Re: Strange whine
perhaps gearbox noise being transmitted through gear stick.

Thank you, that sounds expensive!! There's no problems getting into any of the gears, would they be tricky if there was a problem?

No, I have had whine off the crown and pinion before, it's not affected gear change. Try an take a video, I know sound is not great on a mobile but may help.
Also get somebody to sit in the back while it's driven to see if they can tell if the whine is louder in the back or front.

Re: Strange whine
When you say 'intermittent' does the noise alter as you turn the steering wheel to the left or right slightly? If so, it could be a wheel bearing.

Re: Strange whine
My gearbox had a loud whine whilst accelerating, but changed through all the gears without a problem.

Hi, no turning left or right doesn't affect the sound, by intermittent, it isn't there when we start off, comes on for a while then literally just stops and then a bit later starts again. Haven't noticed any connection with accelerating, going up or down hills or turning :/

Thank you, will do that. I've got a video from my phone but it's not brilliant and I'm not sure how to load it onto here I'm afraid. I'll give it a go.

.......could it be your radiator fan kicking in and out?

Re: Strange whine
Does it go away when braking or touching the brake pedal?

Re: Strange whine
The sound does change slightly, but not when related to braking or accelerating as far as I can work out. I did wonder about the radiator fan, but took it out at the weekend and turned the fan off, didn't seem to be related to the radiator fan as that only seems to kick in when the engine gets warm.
