Or not Mike
1989 panel van, ran mountain bikes round Nottingham for it's working life. Now, with in the region of 325,000 miles on the clock (yes, seriously), it's time for it's nether regions to have the fettling it deserves.

I am interested in how you do the driver side cill as the one I bought and most of the others I have seen for sale are too long.

The bottoms of the two B posts have come from them.

Re: Sills both sides starts Monday 11th
Well first panels, the lower sill (fridge side) is a very good item from either krappers or schofields, likewise the lower B posts, the rest will be as coming up or for "kit" I will add a link at the end of a few ways to do them,
bit like a city style rock slider for grazing bollards
nice to see they were secured with the correct length of SS screw
we shall dispense with the external picky as theres not much to see.............
but starting at the rear
...
and front
if you dont quite see it then
...
think its safe to say its .......
now this is the N/S rear chassis member and it looks fine but see the screwdriver
it makes its appearance as so
...
...
...
so we now have both rear chassis legs un attatched to the floorpan /body yes there is a bit of attachmennt under but not really as it should be so this willl have to be attended to and no im not removing boox etc i shall work it another way.
this doesnt help
its had window lip repairs in the past also closer up you can see the gap in the seal and the water trail,
there is also a hole on the osr inner arch that allows the wheel to throw water straigh onto the area across the rear and helpm takke out the chassis leg mounts
we have OE sills etc and a few pattern bits
As i was under looking round I had cause to give this a yank, drivers
and exp tank coming away
inside whats left
thern a short tug on the passenger side
now as this runs on fools fuel (when not on gas ) the fuel tank really does have to come out for safety sake
its quite good but will need a good clean and paint etc then some dynax ub ,etc. so thats it for a peek and tomoz will get a cutting.
Kit, about here

if you go to tech archive there are a half dozen or so ive done to show

Re: Sills both sides starts Monday 11th
Well play time
..
B post is actually still there, subject to further unpeeling
more like a large fridge vent now , both seats out nfor safekeeping and stuff screened of as best as can
this is the rear of the N/S tank bet it let loads of water in as well
my old fn50 ive had 40+years and was s/hand when i got it finally died so treated to this which will outlive me
it just runs so sweet and all the better with this attached
so we chop the centre through at this end
then the front
...
care should be taken not to just drill.grind force and hack stuff as we want the crap out without dammaging the remnants of of what we wish to keep/repair
this bit off now
this shows the inner sill which is not that bad really, well subject to further cleaning etc, the raggy stuff it the edge of the load bed /main floor
we end up with this left
here you will see area "A", this is the lip of the inner sill and we need to retain/remake this, .
"B" is the main load bed/floor and again this will be cut back and a new edge swaged and let in, .I have marked the spots and you will see that the main floor is spotted to the inner sill then the slider assembly is later spotted to the floor only , this is why its a pig to try unpick in the conventional way, also the slider assembly is 14g i think so not easy, if you dont have a gas axe then it can be done with cutting discs but this is quicker for me.
this is cause for concern as its part of the rear arm/jp vertical support
and someone has beat me to it, looks a nice weld so hopefully they done it right
still may have to cut it open agsain
now see the two chalk lines and the swelling inbetween
well its the usual corrosion expanding and as more moisture gets in it expands more and so forth
no ammount of vactasn and wire brushing will do anything at all here, its to be cut out and replaced, now i tap it a little
and a bit more
remove loose and carry on
so its all to come out.

Interesting to see sliding door side sill. Not many seem to have done those. I remember wondering how to even start cutting mine out. Ended up drilling out the spot welds along that heavy cover plate... Heck of a job! Gas looks much quicker!

Re: Sills both sides starts Monday 11th
well.got the front part removed, theyre a pig to do in some respects, inner B post looks salvageable, but inner sill is shot around the JP,
..
back to the rear bit we chalked
no surprises there then...
bit by bit it comes away, resist the temptation to just hack it out, even if youve done it a few times before they are never the same especially if a.n.other has been in before
...
ahh better, the area under the 5p is immediately on top of the rear jp/arm mount, its no big issue even thoiugh it looks bad, main thing is to open up , remove the crud, make good and reweld,
for that the lower portion of the nsr wing/arch will have to be cut away to get access and so it goes
that said it does have issues even though it had a new arch a bit back , they didnt fit it the best way though but thats another tale, this is not meant to happen
n/s leg , pretty isnt it
you can even have a look inside
the 3 flanges that weld to the rear floor pan etc I will probably chop of and remake with nice good steel
parts of yer van
...
so it will be outer lower B post off and lower bit of the nsf wing also to attend this lot.
