For most of those standard sizes I carry a combi spanner, a ratchet spanner and at least one socket.

plus all the other 'essentials' like a new CV joint, accelerator cable, spare engine etc :)

i carry a spare alternator brush pack, a CV joint, a starter motor, the last set of plugs , leads and dissy cap from the last service, 1 lire of oil, a oil filter and some DOT4 brake fluid and various rubber pipes and clips and joiners, and gaffer tape, self amalgamating tape and the AA card.
mostly end up putting them on other folks vans who don't bother to carry spares !

My offering.

Keep it together:
gaffa tape, wire + cutters, hammer.. tow rope.
Antifreeze, plusgas..
lighter, water, sunglasses, insect repellent.

Ok not the hammer.
But always axe, and silky saw.

And more technically:
Spare, brace, jack, nutcracker bar,
fuel, shovel, wipe paper,
tie downs, net
tin of fish, salt.

Electrystery detection:
Headtorch, rubber gloves, screwdriver,
sunglasses, (always a spare pair)
spare battery, jump leads.
(no multimeter, no idea)

The going gets tough:
Slasher, lopper, thick gauntlets,
flouro vest and hat,
refreshment, phone and map.
Bail.

Cover Story:
Epic journey.
Thriller, heroic adventure,
romantic narrative,
risky rescue,
bringing home, happy ending.

Most important not to forget:
The tools are there when needed!
Where to go, and the way home.
Have fun.
Dont lose the kids!
Key.

Ps:
Always a pump,
as spare is to big for its stash,
it gets deflated.

Remember:
Breakdown leads to breakthrough.

I’ve been watching this thread with interest as it’s what we are trying to do for our van.
Our approach has been to start with anything we might need for basic repair and pare down the tool not practical to take or use in the field.

We are still learning what we need, so the list below is not complete.

So here is what we’ve come up with so far.
The items in green are available but heavy so maybe paired down further as we find which ones are not needed, likewise any other items we find not needed, will be left at home.
Items in the mauve are still on our wishlist or taken from home ( so not yet permanently in the tool kit) but I think I need to get them ASAP.
The items in brown are specific to fit the engine & suspension I have fitted.

The Tool kit.

1/4″ drive socket set, 3 to 13mm.
3/8″ drive socket set, 8 to 24mm.
1/2″ drive socket set, 24 to 36mm.

Socket drive adaptors, (3/4” to 1/2” to 3/8” to 1/4”).
Socket extension bars.
1/2″ drive 10 – 200 N-m, digital torque wrench.
3/4″ drive 100 – 1000 N-m, digital torque wrench.
3/4″ drive 46mm socket, (for rear hub nut).

If there’s an essential tool I have missed I would like to know before I need it so please let me know, (the kitchen sink is already fitted and part of the van).

Putting the tool kit together was the easy bit, just need to learn how to use it now.

I would probably add a couple of wheel chocks to that list, and a jack stand if you can find somewhere to put it

We’ve got some wheel chokes that came with our levelling wedges but I'm not certain how strong they are, need to do a bit more research there, we are hoping to store the levelling wedges under the font of the van eventually.
The jack stand we also have, (a bit of waffle board) for the High lift, but hadn’t thought about leaving it in the van permanently.

Sorry, crossed wires - I was thinking more about one of the tripod style axle stands rather than a jack base. You need to have some way of propping the van up so you can work underneath it safely, and I wouldn't recommend you go under anything that's only supported on a Hi-Lift jack.

I did wonder whether you meant axle stands, although I have some at home they are very heavy and bulky so not suitable to go in the van (certainly not on a permanent basis).
However I do have a cunning plan, but I'm keeping it under my hat (in case it’s a complete failure) until I have some time to work on it, more on this if it works.
Can’t do much until the van is back and running, soon I hope as the parts are all due back in the next week or so, then it just needs to be put back together, more on this when it happens as well.

Christ! Some of these lists are huge! I regularly service my van so I don't expect to get much go wrong but I do carry some spanners and screwdrivers, tape, wire, cable ties and the like. Any breakdown needing more complex tooling and its the RAC for me! If I was travelling abroad I would take more though.

Yes, they are our starting point and will certainly be paired down as we learn what is really needed.
For local trips and weekends away, most of it will probably be left at home.
