Well it could be anything depending on the sort of smell.. rubber, fuel, exhaust fumes, oil, hot engine smell etc. Is it coming from the rear vents or can you smell it in the cab?

If you have driven it with a brake locked on for some distance you can overheat the drum and distort it leading to constant overheating. I did that when a rear brake partially seized on - only cure is new brake drum. ( and proper overhaul of the brakes system )

Jack that wheel up with the handbrake off after chocking the front wheels, spin the wheel and see if you get intermittent rubbing, tighten the handbrake a notch at a time and keep checking - if you reach a point where the brakes start catching every turn or 1/2 turn you know that the drum has gone oval. If they only rub constantly the drum will not be distorted and it is more likely to be brake cylinder is goosed and not retracting properly.
