Gearbox and front diff value

Postby mattlad » 22 Jan 2020, 12:55

What would you guys say the value of a unknown condition gearbox and front diff be?

I know of a Syncro that’s been off the road for 4 years and am trying to get to see it but could do with a idea of what the big bits are worth if it is too rotten.

Cheers

Unknown gearboxes are strange. Realistically should be only worth £400 due to the fact that it could easily cost £2500 to £3000 to rebuild. You see this cost in known driving boxes. But mad people have been paying way over the odds for them and they normaly sell for £800 to £1200.
Front diff sell for £250 to £350

Thanks - that’s useful. Trying to see what my bottom line would be if it comes to anything - it may turn out the van is solid and just needs recommissioning!!

- I’ve been trying to view the van for over a year so it’s a slow burner.....

I had a pic sent to me of three NOS "ALM" diffs for sale, asking €1800 each complete with VC

But they are the unusual 35/6 ratio (5.83) with the unique speedo drive

Nice, but unless you have 5.83...

As Russel has said secondhand boxes can be a bit of a mystery when I comes to price. It's a bit like opening Christmas presents you never know what lies inside and until they are stripped down, cleaned and inspected (1-2 days work)you cant ascertain properly what they are worth. In my experience most boxes at this stage need work doing to them they are all 30 -35 years old and have never seen an oil change. £500 + is probably the price range front diff around 250. Gearbox rebuilds are also.increasing in price due to unavailability of parts so figure around 3000 at least for a decent rebuild
