Sadly last night there was a collossal bang! and it appears the outer rear CV joint failed and actually popped apart! The drive shaft was sort of hanging loose! I hope there has been no damage to the 4WD system? I think the VC must have been working hard to get me home last night!

I've just stripped it down, and my only explainaintion might be I put them on the wrong way round? I followed the guide on brickwerks, https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/t3-parts/t3-syncro/drivetrain/drive-shafts/rear-driveshafts/cv-joint-kit-t3-rear-alternative.html which actually says there should be three rings, not one.

Seems there has been some excessive wear on the outer lip of the inner section of the CV joint - see pics...

original cvs had one groove and that faced the wheel or the gearbox and both the inner hub and the cage were handed but I can't see from your pictures the differences between the sides of the two parts, did the circlip come off the end of the shaft ? are the shafts 541mm long, early 2wd ones are 548mm
where were the cvs from ?

Thanks Aidan,

I think they are the stock shafts. It's a bit tricky to measure as I've just now fitted them back on. The circlip was still on. These were from Brickwerks, but the cheaper one's. I don't do many miles, so did'nt buy the more expensive versions. However I did see an assemply discrepncy with the two spares that I've just flagged up with Brickwerks. Though I can't see why this would make a difference?

Note bevel on central ball ring not the same orientation:

What I've read is the bevel on the inner splined section should face the shaft. The bevel on the middle ball ring should also face the shaft. The ring around the outside should face the wheel / gearbox.

I'd also replaced the CV joint at gearbox side and it showed no wear as the wheel end.
