Use this calculator to see how bad the leap to 4th will be when you've over done it :D

Its a useful thing, works for "our" tyre sizes.

A back to back comparison of early petrol Caravelle ratios with a 4th gear swapped to diesel ratio. Drops engine rpm to ~3200 at 70 from ~3500
