Front diff locks?

Postby spanishfly » 21 Apr 2019, 07:58

Some progress with my van.... but as always one foot forwards.....!
On the plus side no rust to speak of and has clearly had new heads, rad and brakes.
Now new driveshaft outer boots and upper ball joints.
Having changed a few perished vacuum hoses near the 3 ball reservoir and attached the missing red hose at the front actuator I now have a green light up front but an unmanoevrable van!
I haven't started with the actuator freeing game but as the lock has engaged am a bit confused about how to disengage it?
It is possible I connected the red/black the wrong way round I guess. Is the only way to disengage it to spend the time freeing it up properly as per various guides here?
Reason I ask is it is now blocking much of the busy yard of the long suffering local garage who's patience is wearing thin and I need a quick fix to free until I have more time to lavish the attention it deserves!
I have tried the front switch but this doesn't yet seem to be operative! Any pearls would be much appreciated!

When you connected it, did it engage itself or did you pull the actuator out on the dash panel to test it? Is it definately engaged or is it just the light has come on?

The black hose goes to the blue body of the actuator, not "black to black" as you might presume.

front hoses are red and grey
I am not certain of which is which normally, I have red to black cap, grey to blue body but as I retrofitted the difflock system I could have plumbed it either way, I probably tried to do it 'right' but as you can reverse them at the dash switch and at the vacuum unit it may be wrong, but as long as you know which is which at the switch you can get them right at the vacuum unit

Thanks everyone. I didn't activate it, it activated itself when I moved it off the ramp.
Thanks I'll swap them tomorrow and see if my wrong way round pushes logic makes sense?

Thanks for the advice, very helpful. I had plumbed the front the wrong way round. Now working front though no drive shaft but not back will replace perished corners with straight and see if that helps.

The rear DL really needs the original elbows fitted on the pipes, mine had bits of straight hose fitted and they were folded almost flat because of the pipe routing.
