The outer hubs have old cannibalised outer CV joints fitted. This will be to keep the bearings from falling apart.

The nut in the "middle of the wheel" is securing the flange (that carries the wheel) to end of the front outer cv joint (which passes through the wheel bearing unit).
I suggest getting a copy of the Bentley manual and reading up on the syncro 4x4 drive system.

Introducing “Scabby Abbey”

Postby Rdav1s » 23 Jan 2020, 18:23

FAG has been affectionately given the name of “Scabby Abbey”

Almost a year of ownership and I have to say, wow, I’ve loved it. Spring ‘19 saw a lot of cosmetic interior work and some electrical alterations ahead of our getaway. Summer ‘19 saw Abbey heading for the Chamonix valley for the TDS. She performed effortlessly and never missed a beat. The bungy cord that held 4th in place at times was interesting when climbing the hills.

Now it’s time to recommission the 4 wheel drive. Diff and box (when I get it out this weekend) are on their way to you Aidan:-D

My one must be stamped wrong.
It's an M8 bolt on a 14" anyway. Same as any Golf (fitted the cv's on the Mk4)
