Gelände translates more as "across the land" or cross-country iirc but is used as the generic term for an offroader of any sort.
A bit like the BBC inventing the term "field car" in the 1950's to describe a Land Rover, because they couldn't use brand names!

Steady on! I'm not sure you're allowed to be pedantic about German translations like that, given the way the language puts some of its compound nouns together, for example:

der Scheinwerfer = light thrower = headlight
das Flugzeug = flight thing = aeroplane
die Handschuhe = hand shoes = gloves
das Schlagzeug = hit stuff = drums

Well, there’s work to be done. FAG is booked on a ferry bound for Chemonix for the whole of August :-)

I have a list of work as I know we all do. With that list comes questions :P

Does the speedo go direct to the front diff? I’m sure it does. If that’s the case, no wonder my speedo doesn’t work.

Based on this, I’ve now looked thru the MOT history mileage.its done around 4000 miles per year since 2012. Then, It’s done 4 miles since last MOT in May 2018. It failed in the same month with “Both front brakes fluctuating”.

Is it possible that someone removed the driveshafts as this could be a cause of the fluctuation???

Thanks

You're right about the speedo, brakes sound more like warped discs ?

Speedo should still work, because its driven by the front diff pinion shaft. If the wheels are going round, the diff pinion shaft will be rotating too.
Assuming you have front drive shafts, iirc you said yours were AWOL?
Another culprit can be the speedo drive shaft in its bearing sleeve, this strips the plastic gear, quite common, fixable.
Unless there's no front diff in there at all!

The drive shafts ARE missing so was the prop. The front diff is there but at the moment I think it’s acting as a counter balance for the engine for what it’s worth.
I guess next thing on the shopping list are 2 front drive shafts.
Has anyone got an odd pair at the back of there garage

Pretty please

Ok. Start with driveshafts and a prop.

Are fronts and rears the same (I should know this but too lazy to engage brain). I have a couple of sets.

Nice van and its great that you are excited about the future of it.
Syncro owners are mostly passionate and supportive of one another.

Is there any way you could find out the history from previous owner(s) ?

It may seem expensive (and it is) but I would just buy the shafts, boots etc complete new,
prop new, in fact whatever it needs.

Easier, quicker, and you know where you are with stuff, give it all a long life.
Maybe cheaper in the long run?

In any case get it to an experienced syncro owner as soon as you can,
anyone with an eye for familiar problems will be a great help, and get you off to a head start.
(Thanks to everyone that has done that for me in the past!)

Thanks,

I went down to see Davidoft1 and bought a prop off him, but because I’m useless, I didn’t check what else I was missing at the time so never mentioned the shafts. I will pm him. I also managed to walk away from his gaff with a tailgate !!! How does that work

Rears are more important imho as they do most of the work, most of the time.
Syncro is fundamentally a rear-drive vehicle with front axle assistance, when the VC is working properly!
