Finally got the wheels changed today and a pair of uk plates made ready to fit.
Now to decide whether to strip it and paint it or just run as is, it doesn't desperately need painted now but all the stone chips along the bottom half will turn nasty when it goes out in the weather and I don't want it rusting yet!
I also removed the dash in prep for doing the Heater motor so I'll decide what I'm going to do before the dash goes back in.

They look a lot better than those awful Mangels.
Defo get the stonechips sorted asap, SA steel is p***poor.

PS check out my mod for re-routing the heater valve cable. It transforms the heat control, almost no resistance at all, so less chance of the knobs cracking.

The old wheels killed it!
First time the workshop is quiet I'll get it painted I think, I've bought a box of the innotec spray seam sealer for the underside so may as well do everything while I'm in the mood for taking it apart.
Thanks for the link to the cable mod, did you're system have vac lines in it as well? I have two which go to a t piece on the bulkhead in the passenger footwell then out to a vac canister thing like the diff lock one under the van which is next to the rad behind the inner spot?

That all looks pretty familiar. Its a carry-over from the Audi 80/90/Coupe heater controls that big window SA's use.
One less cable to kink I suppose.
You will note the late-type heater box, but with blanked-off oval pipes to revert it to the early "cold air at the dash ends" system. Guess they needed fresh air more than heated in SA!

Nice van! I see it is from the Gauteng province (licence plates). Not a lot of water in this province and far from the coast, rust should not be a problem (?) - providing it was in GP for entire life. The vents look awkward, mine is different. Enjoy the van :ok

Thanks, from what I know of the van gauteng was where it was most of its life, that's where I bought it from.
No rust just a covering of dust everywhere!

I've got plenty of time thanks, decided to pull it apart today for paint so I'm in no rush now.Image

Just spent the morning trying to get all the dust off the underside, definitely not much paint under there. From the sill on to the chassis rail has the rubbery under seal, but from there in is hardly even a coat of primer!

I think you need to re-size your images, they seem to be too wide.
