T25 Syncro front wheel bearing worki

Postby RichardF » 23 Dec 2014, 12:58

I have 2 new sets of front wheel bearings and seals, and one wheel bearing housing sitting on the bench next to my press.

On looking more closely at the Bentley Manual, pages 40.24 and 40.25, it says that no less than 12 special tools (mostly mandrels and supports) are needed to remove and replace these parts.

Can someone who has done this job please advise which, if any, of these tools are essential, or whether I can get by, as I usually do, by using various pieces of pipe, large sockets, etc.

If any are essential, can anyone please advise the appropriate dimensions to fabricate them?

at the very minimum a vise and a hammer will do!
So, anywhere between this and what the Bentley says should see you right!

In all seriousness a selection of large sockets and a press will suffice, a vise and a sharp chisel.

Thanks a lot, Simon.

I found pictures of all the tools here, quite useful to take away the mystery of them :)

I never did change the wheel bearings. They are still sitting on a shelf in their boxes, as I couldn't fit the bearing carriers and mandrels under my press.

I did however change the seals, and found a chip of metal from somewhere under one seal. I removed it, checked the bearing carefully, and re-greased them both.

Still running quietly :D
