Front diff lock flashing light fix

Postby Dutchdude » 22 Jan 2014, 11:59

Hi Guys,

In my syncro the blinking diff lock light never worked. The light comes on when the front difflock is engaged, but it is supposed to blink intermittent when the knob is pulled and the difflock has not come in yet.

I know there is a little circuit board tucked away behind the difflock console. It is covered in foam and has three wires on it and a plug. (it actually turns out te be an Audi quattro part by the partnumber). You can unplug it and remove the foam. First check if the power supply, lightbulb and vacuum switch are o.k. before you proceed. By vacuum switch I do NOT mean the pulling knob, but the metal round shaped switch mounted behind the console to the car body. It has two plugs with brown wires on it and one vacuum hose. If you connect the wires together, and the light then flashes, this vacuumswitch is faulty.. No need for any soldering then.

I fixed it by replacing two components on the small circuit board, a transistor and a capacitor. Total cost: 0,75 euro. It all works fine now. Don't forget to insulate the part with foam or something else before putting it back to prevent a short with the terminals touching metal)

As I am under the impression these small circuit boards are very often broken, this repair might work for others too!

Disclaimer: This worked for me, so it might do the trick for you also, however at your own risk. If your car burns down to the ground I'm not to blame  ..

I marked the parts you need to replace, a transistor on the left and a capacitor on the right (watch polarity!)

the backside of the circuit board. You need a small soldering iron to do the job.

I seem to remember doing this 20 years ago on my first syncro. Did you happen to record the specifications for the components so we can be confident buying parts before stripping it all out?

thanks

I still have the old parts here, and these are the type numbers:

Transistor: C32725

Capacitor: 10 microfarad / 25 volt

I got the electronic parts at the local electronics store, they had them in stock since these are all pretty basic components. Don't know about the u.k. though, but should not be too difficult to obtain.

I have just repaired mine today. I got the parts from Maplins where we discovered that the existing transistor part number is BC327. I was also told that the 25 volt spec for the capacitor means it won't handle anything over that. Therefore Maplins 50 volt unit is satisfactory.

Anyway, I managed to solder them in without shorting the circuit board (could have done with a smaller soldering iron!) and it works now.

Do you have the part number for the capacitor too?
