Where do buy your windows from?

Post by DM164 »

Some little sod smashed my nearside rear window last night so I'm searching for a new one.

Any ideas where I can get one for an early ('85) van conversion (Holdsworth Villa 2)?

As that’s a panel van conversion window it won’t necessarily be a standard size, can you put up some measurements

Had a chat with MM who said the same and advised I use the offside rear window as a template and get two acrylic ones cut.

Better than nowt!

It's toughened glass, any glass comany can cut you glass, grind the edges and toughen it but it will take a week because to toughen it it needs to go in a kiln.

Measuring is hard because of the curves and angles, the glass and hole need to be exactly the same with about 7mm difference all around, if not it will leak or it won't go in.

I have though about what I'd do before and it's this:
I'd take the old window out and cut a piece of thin plywood a little bigger then offer it up and draw around the metal edge carefully, take this to the glass cutters to cut the window to, you will need to get them to cut it smaller by the distance of the web of the seal which is typically about 7mm
Take an old bit of glass with you so they can measure the thickness, probably 3mm or 4mm

If they won't cut to this then cut the wood yourself and check it' 7mm smaller all around and take that along.

Alternatively as said cut a sheet of perspex with the same technique.

I used the unbroken one as a template and replaced both of mine with tinted Acrylic rather than clear - really pleased with them. Also, get less condensation forming on the acrylic than the glass windows......

Can you get a window out with the seal intact for reuse?

I could have used the old rubber but it depends on the condition of the existing rubber, cracked or split, etc. I bought a long length of rubber seal and the inner part from my local boat Chandlers (we have a lot here in Norfolk with all the boatyards and rivers, etc) and cut it to the correct length for each side but there are plenty of on-line suppliers. The new rubber seemed more pliable, there were no cracks or splits and it just looked better.

dont forget to seal the windows when you put them back I use arbomast autograde

I found it best to apply it all around both window and van side of seal after the window was in but before adding the strip. You need the diamond glazing tool also

.....Doh! Just realised that I must have the one I removed lurking in my garage. My Autohomes Karisma is based on a panel van conversion, no good to me if wanted...

I have a rear side glass here out of a cut panel van, think it was from a leisure drive, with seal, it's tinted
lonest measurement over seal 975mm ish , shortest roughly 88cm height 455mm ish
you can have it for the cost of postage

I've had a look and I seem to be at 950, 850 and 415, think it'll be too big all around unfortunately

Without knowing anything about the how the rear seals work (inner and outer?!) Is there any chance of squeezing this in or not?
