Rear Lock rebuild '82 T25
Hi all,
I have just replaced the tumblers in the boot lock on my 1982 devon; I thought I would post some pictures to help others.
I was changing the tumblers to suit my new sliding door lock.
The lock assembly was removed by removing all three of the screws that hold the lock assembly into the boot lid, initially I only took the centre one out but I could not get the lock out .
The barrel assembly is then removed from the lock by priseing out the circlip with a small screwdriver.
The barrel is then pulled out of the plastic housing.
The arm on the end of the lock is then released by carefully knocking out the roll pin
Make a note of the order of the parts.
At this point make sure the key is in the lock and then with draw the barrel
The seal is broken so I will replace it with an O ring when I rebuild the lock.
As I was going to replace the tumblers I pulled the key out and all the springs and tumblers fell out. These are very small!!!!
The barrel was cleaned up with carb cleaner and the new tumblers fitted using the old springs. 5 from one side and 2 from the other
The lock was then re assembled as it came apart having clean all the parts up and lightly greased
The tab was located in the plastic housing and the circlip refitted.
Hope this helps
Regards
Pete

Finally got around to adding this to the WIKI. Its very useful and beautifully photographed. Much of it applies to door locks too, at least in terms of re-keying them.

Thank you Petethefeet for your efforts on this!
For the record, ignition key lock is NOT like door locks. Although the tumblers and general appearance may look similar, the tumblers are longer/thicker than those seen in door locks and there are more of them - ten in all, some back to back. Its an incredibly frustrating, fiddly job at best and it would be wiser (and cheaper) to re-key door locks to a new ignition lock - not the other way around. I tried, gave up and reinstated the original tumbler sequence and key. You have been warned - you'll regret trying.
If you really must re-key your ignition, you'll need a BIG pile of secondhand ignition locks for parts and personally I would not recommend anyone attempt this at all. There are just too many different tumbler types/numbers in an ignition lock. Doubt VW stock them any more so if its become very sloppy, just buy a new lock. Its not such a major hardship having a different key for ignition anyway. It may even improve security.

Does anyone know if these tumbler kits are still available?
I would like to tighten up my locks/keys.

Don't think this is always the case as I have re-keyed ignition barrels using the same set of 4 tumbler sizes I use for the rest of the locks, I have seen after-market barrels with thinner tumblers of the same length, but any genuine VW barrels I've done have not been a problem.

Re: Rear Lock rebuild '82 T25
Can anyone please point me towards somewhere I can purchase the complete plate as shown in the first photo? The catch on mine was seized solid after being stood for five years and I had to use a long tungsten carbide burr to cut the old old away!
