Gear change / selection 5 speed

Hello

I would appreciate some advice regarding my 1990 5 speed gearbox, I will explain.

The problem is with the gear lever mechanism not the box itself as the box was fully refurbished a few years ago and is tip top.

For a long time there has always been a split second delay before I can select 2nd from 1st and 3rd from 2nd. There is a 'click' sound comes from the gear selection mechanism (under the gear leaver gator), after which it will allow me to select.

I am so used to it the issue has never bothered me, however if it is driven by anyone else for example garages over the years, I often get feedback from people to say they struggle to drive it, no doubt the same for many T25 owners.

Anyway, just lately the problem has become worse with a longer delay for the 'click' between gears, it is especially worrying when I have to pull away quickly for example at a roundabout as I can't change up fast and i end up delayed in neutral until it clicks and I can drop into the next gear up.

Researching on here it is obvious that the gear lever ball mechanism etc needs a referb. Would anyone with experience of this please give me a rundown of what's going on and what I need to do to sort it out.

Many thanks

Paul

The ball/socket is simple enough to refurb, less than an hour and I would try this first, it'll certainly take a lot of the sloppiness out of the changes.
The click sounds similar to mine, though it was only on 1st to 2nd and it was caused by the reverse lock-out mechanism sticking (this being the pressure you feel when selecting 1st/reverse) The rubber boot on the bottom of the stick had worn though and this resulted in a loss of grease/lack of lubrication. Parts to replace can be had from Brickwerks, I also opted tor renew the small rubber grommet that cushions the detent ball and the bushes either side of the fork where it bolts to the rod. The bottom part of the gear lever which houses the reverse lock out/detent etc is again easy enough, if a little fiddly so patience is your friend here!

To give you some idea of what is involved there is a good guide here https://vwt25.blog/2016/03/06/gear-lever-refurbishment/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks so much Muttleypup, that is really helpful and I had not come across that guide either.

I will assemble the parts and rebuild it, the mechanism has covered over 200,000 so a refurb is certainly due.
