fill with oil and lube internal parts as you reassemble
lube bores and lifters as you refit.
add camshield to oil.
when you start up minimal idle take it straight out to drive on roads where revs change regularly no crusing
idle with new cam parts is bad it needs revs change.

WHS^^
Not too much idling.
Drive it.

I turned my engine over several times without the king lead on.
This got some decent pressure in the lifter gallery to fill them up.

Just replace the whole set unless you want to be doing it all again in about 2 weeks.

Apologies for the lack of updates, could only work on it yesterday. First time it's not been raining since the last post!

Aside from the lifter I couldn't get out, 4 were cleaned and 3 new ones replaced the duft lifters. Got everything back in, oil and filter changed, added some camoil, reset valve clearances, go to start it and... forgot I gave my bro my battery.
Going to get that back asap, crank to pre lube the engine with king lead off and take it for a decent drive.

Been a while since I last posted, had flat battery issues.

Finally got It ready to start and it ran for a few seconds then cut out. Found the issue was oily spark plugs. I cleaned them up and googled the problem.

Since it was running fine before hand, (aside from the collapsed lifter noise) i figure it might be excess valve clearance. I set it to zero preload from cold initially and it ran for a few seconds before cutting out.

I then set it to 2 full turns on the adjuster screws from cold, cleaned the spark plugs and that also ran for a few seconds before cutting out.

Now I'm unsure what to do. Should I try screwing them in even further or does this risk damaging it in some other way?

Thanks in advance

Adjustment of the lifters should really take place after a 10 min warmup.
Then set at TDC and 1.5 turns in from touching.
The engine should run regardless of 0 or 2 turns

It suggests you have a serious fueling problem.
Id sort that out first.
Starting with delivery from the pump and working your way in

Do not turn the screw any further in

Hi Kev,

I've pretty much given up on this now, gonna sell it as spares and choose a better base van to upgrade at this point.

Turns out valves aren't the problem (they were but refurbing them worked), after I changed them and did an oil and filter change, which I accidentally overfilled. I went to start and got clouds of blue smoke. Sounded and ran nice for a few secs before cutting out.

Oil is getting on the spark plugs. I drained the oil to correct level, cleaned the spark plugs, checked the breather tower wasnt puking oil or excess gas by having a catch tank and blocking the intake tube on the carb. Replaced air filter.

Since it was running before the change I thought it wouldn't be worn valve guides or piston rings but I've tried all the other methods I've found and it's still happening, maybe the old oil was thick enough to not get sucked into the combustion chamber? Was on 20w50 but switched to 15w40 semi synth.

So now everytime I go to run, it'll start on first crank but cuts out after a few secs of idle and clouds of blue smoke. I can only keep it going by revving as each cylinder gets worse and will eventually cut out anyways. It's a tired old abused engine so dont want to dump anymore money into it.

I've tried taking out the spark plugs and cranking out any oil stuck in the chamber, no luck there it just refills.

Thanks for the advice, hopefully the next project is less of a nightmare!
