As above this should be easy enough if replaced relatively recently, just be careful with the thermostat housing as these are obsolete now.

The op said that the carb has been stripped, might not be a blocked idle jet.

Also check that all the earths are clean and in good order.

It could be your fuel system especially your fuel filter, a clogged filter can cause random stalls and unable to restart. Wow, that's a long time!!

Sounds like a bad experience whilst learning to weld!! Pretty glad I learnt to do it, saved a lot of money and kept my van on the road. Agree it's not for everyone but it's definitely a handy thing to be able to do when owning an old vehicle
