 Usually a signal is taken from one coil of the alternator on diesels.
You used to be able to get a sender on one injection pipe that worked by sensing the pulse and converting it into an electrical signal as well.

I would check the drums for wear also - especially as you had to back the brakes off meaning there is a lip, (I would replace them myself).

Series for the higher voltage? Parallel for panel voltage.

No, generally a car's heater is taken off the engine before the thermostat - otherwise you would never be able to demist your screen until well into your journey.
