Re: Strange knocking sound
Could well be the spring turret actually. There’s a considerable amount of rust there that I planned on sorting when I come to lower the van. The van is off the road now so gives me a chance to have a look at all these potential issues, cheers guys

Re: Strange knocking sound
I’ve recently rebuilt the drum brakes with new pins/springs so that shouldn’t be the issue, I’ll have a look anyway though cheers. Thanks to everyone on this thread I’ve got a few leads to investigate now… exhaust mounts, gearbox mount or maybe knackered rear springs.

Re: Strange knocking sound
Ah I see, I’ve actually replaced both rear jacking points/trailing arm mounts so yea that can’t be it either. I suppose it could be the wheel bearings although I’ve been told it’s more of a deep rumbling sound when wheel bearings are worn. Someone mentioned the exhaust could be at fault and it could...

Re: Strange knocking sound
I bought them from JustKampers and they certainly aren’t the highest quality drive shafts/CV joints money can buy but I had the same knocking sound before I replaced them so I think that rules out the CV joints being the problem. Having said that, it’s hard to see what else could be at fault.

Re: Strange knocking sound
It’s a repeating knock and only occurs when accelerating whilst turning to the right. So I’ve actually developed a habit of taking my foot off the accelerator when turning right to avoid this knocking. Best way to describe the noise is it’s as if a horse is galloping behind me lol.

Strange knocking sound
Hi all. I’ve had this issue for quite some time and cannot get to the bottom of it. There is a knocking sound coming from the rear of my van (‘86 1.9 DG) and it seems to only occur specifically when turning right whilst accelerating. My first guess was the drive shafts since the noise doesn’t occur ...

Re: Pierburg carb - throttle stick
Thanks. I’ve actually watched those before when I partially* rebuilt the carb a few months ago, I was nervous to take every little component off, I just cleaned the essential bits. Probably worth revisiting and doing it properly. I actually have the carb off tonight and found that the throttle mecha...

Re: Pierburg carb - throttle stick
Cheers for the reply. Yea I’ve tried that, pushing the lever manually brings it to the correct idling speed but it’s only temporary… whenever the throttle is pressed again it sticks just above where it should be in contact with idle screw

Pierburg carb - throttle stick
My throttle seems to periodically stick in the position just above the idle screw causing the van to sit at high revs when out of gear. For context, I’ve had the carb out and thoroughly cleaned so I think the problem lies between the throttle cable, the return spring or perhaps the throttle mechanis...

Re: 1.9l petrol fast idle
Thanks for your reply. I have since discovered the problem is that sometimes the throttle does not return to where it’s touching the idle screw. Does this mean the spring needs replaced? Or perhaps it’s just positioned incorrectly as it wasn’t that long ago when I had the carb off for a thorough cle...

1.9l petrol fast idle
There are similar threads on here but couldn’t find anything relating to my specific problem. The van idles perfectly on ignition when engine is cold but after a few minutes it starts to idle really fast and stays at a consistent speed. Sometimes if I blip the throttle it’ll bring it down to regular...

Re: Brake disc is too thick for calliper
Ah that must be my issue, I’ll put some copper grease on the pads and change the other side too then, thanks for all the help

Re: Brake disc is too thick for calliper
So I was able to get the calliper onto the new disc and I replaced the pads too… there’s now an occasional squeaking noise coming from the wheel on that side. Would I be silly to drive it home? Maybe if I put the old pads back on I won’t have this issue? Please help!

Re: Brake disc is too thick for calliper
Trying to do the bare minimum to get it back on the road so that I can drive it home, not ideal doing this stuff at the side of the road! I’ll worry about changing brake fluid and the disc on the other side after I’ve got it home safely. Okay thanks got a good idea of what I’m doing now, I’ll head d...

I’m trying to do it myself as I restore classic cars for a living and so I’m keen to learn!
