Re: Knocking from ventilation system
£45 an hour is cheap now, even for a general garage where the owner owns the building and is well established; there's a real dearth of mechanics, good ones especially, minimum wages for the apprentice/sweeper upper aren't inconsiderable, yes there are apps and the like for book keeping and accounts...

Re: Drum brake adjuster is not visible
I wonder if your have an bay window backplate fitted instead of a T3/T25 one, looking at the parts diagram they aren't the same and the adjusters are different, it's not easy to now see exactly what was fitted to the early T3/T25 - the rear hub stayed the same but I don't know if the bay backplate w...

Re: Coolant.
Expansion tank should be full There's a top up tank (which should be half full) behind the rear flap connected to the expansion tank via the pressure (darlek) cap, when excess pressure is required to escape it escapes into the top up tank, which has three vent holes on the top so excess coolant/stea...

Re: Headlight switch
I'd be checking the earth crowns, there's a few shared ones which when corroded can result in contact to earth not being made and power instead being diverted via hi beam led which is acting as one way valve as diodes are polarity sensitive

Re: Dowel on flywheel dg engine
Flywheel has a TDC pickup on the back , should be a pickup cable coming from the top of the case face the connector of which should be secured to the alternator, it only works with the original factory VW diagnostics tool/scanner; most engines that have been rebuilt have lost the sensor and cable an...

Re: Ring and pinnion for 1.7D
You don't have the power to pull taller gearing, the stock gearbox is matched to the engine, 1.7s were delivery vehicles, good acceleration up through the gears round town, great up to 50, not ideal as a mile munching motorway cruiser, so slow and steady holiday mode, hold up the traffic on a hill o...

Re: Rear bearings, housing and stub axel issue - question
bearing housings are same for 2wd and 14" Syncro, the 16" ones are different, bearing housing is a 211 part, so actually late bay, not T3 specific

Re: 2.1 DJ playing up when hot
Bremi is a cheap coil, like £20 new, original Bosch was £150+, there will be a reason why its so cheap, and the fact it is rusty but not that old is suspicious, so that would be my first thing to check Original Bosch coil is nla, they don't make them like that any more, there are alternatives and go...

Re: 2.1 DJ playing up when hot
I'd start with checking you have good earths, to the shell and to the engine, then the service items, rotor arm, disi cap, spark plugs, even just visual check can be diagnostic, is the sprung centre contact good, are the four plug contacts intact, rotor arm tip not excessively eroded etc.. for examp...

Re: Voltage Stabilizer
afaik TCA 700Y is the original voltage regulator made by ITT in France, certainly that's what is in the dash I have for spares, and if you look for that specific electronic component you'll find them for £60+ but there's a listing on German Ebay for them for £13 plus shipping, but the listing is vis...

Re: 2.1 DJ playing up when hot
DJ is higher compression 2.1, originally designed for 4 star fuel, running a map based ignition system with only 4 input signals, air mass, air temp, water temp, timing from hall sender, using vacuum advance and retard for almost all the timing adjustment, ecu controls fuelling - nominally 112bhp on...
