Knocking Noise from left side of engine... PLEASE HELP!

It seems to be one thing after another with my van at the moment! Developed a leak from the water pump so replaced that and thougth I'd replace the expansion tank and level sensor at the same time as the tank had developed a small crack. Replaced with a GSF one and bled the system, only to find that...

Thanks for the replys. I've tried both and it's not sorted the problem. The choke is going off and it's not staying on too long, ie the rotation of the choke body is about right. It's just that right from start up when cold the engine really races. I don't just mean fast but it's pedal to the floor ...

My choke thinks it's on a Ferrari! Please Help!

Van's running sweet once warmed up but for the first five minutes from cold the engines trying to race away from me. When driving this is fine, but at the lights and in traffic, i.e in neutral it's as if I've got the loud pedal on the floor. 1.9DG with Pierburg 2E3. Big nuts and bolts I can handle, ...

I don't know if you've bought the front half yet but I've got a spare one in my garage having spent the weekend fitting a replacement engine on my van. I think it's in good condition - I'll have a look in the morning.

Your's if you want it, pick up from Junct 12 M5.

My friend has a police dog - thought they might be able to do the sniff test

Exhaust studs should be fine as I changed the entire system a few months back and gave the studs some copper grease. Knowing my luck though the head studs will cause problems so I'll plan for the worst!

Thanks Steve/Mocki, your adive is as always invaluable.

I assume any reputable garage can perform a 'sniff' test or is it something I can do?

Mocki, again excuse my ignorance, but having read up on the engine I thought I had a basic understanding of it. Is it not likely to be the head gasket or head if the combustion gasses are getting into the coolent, rather than the water seal seeping coolant then sucking in air from ambient when cooli...

Mocki - excuse my ignorance, but you really need to have a gas test on the coolant - what's one of those then? Westy - I've seen a few people suggesting heads can be 'whipped' off, but reading the hanynes manual they suggest this is an engine out job. I guess because of the layout of the engine this...

Is it a cylinder head problem?

Further to my post 'Strange Overheating???' (thanks for all the posts). To cut a long story short, after repeated overheating I've replaced expansion tank cap and thermostat with genuine parts and flushed and bled the cooling system. I can't seem to find any leaks but I'm loosing water and it's over...

Well i did a compression test today and I got the following values.... 10.5 bar, 10.25 bar (and a slightly oily plug), 9.5 bar and 8.5 bar. I've also noticed that the cooling system seems to be keeping some pressure, even when left overnight. I think this indicates the system being pressurised by a ...

Right - having bled it properly the van ran fine for two fourty mile journeys and then all of a sudden it stopped blowing hot air from the heat exchanger and overheated. I've since bled and re-bled, but it keeps on happening. I've replaced the thermostat and expansion tank cap with genuine vw items....

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'll get the new bits, flush the system and bleed it properly. I shall let you know how it goes.
That's after a careful trip to Devon tomorrow - cooling problems or not, that swell can't be missed!

How much coolant are you loosing over a month?

Bizarre as this sounds for a T25, apart from when it actually over heats I don't think I'm loosing any!

I think it's a new genuine cap and thermostat and a few hours bleeding then.
