Battery for 1983 diesel

Hello,
I need to replace the battery on my 1983 1.6 diesel transporter. All the battery sites say it is too old a vehicle to be able to advise and just want to know the 'original battery. Unfortunately we are at least two batteries down the road since our ownership, one purchased because a breakdown mechanic commented that our battery 'wasn't up to the job' but replaced without much research. We have an additional complication that the original 1.6 diesel engine has been replaced with a 1.9 diesel.
In the end everyone just says get the most powerful battery that fits in the space (a tray in the engine compartment, not under the front seat) but that doesn't help much when there are literally thousands of batteries to choose from.
Can anyone give me one or two recommendations to choose from or some useful guidance. Cold starting has always been a bit of an issue so happy to spend a bit to make sure that isn't a problem but obviously don't want to pay out unnecessarily.
I randomly came across 019 batteries - would that be an option?
Thanks for any help and apologies if this is going over old ground but I couldn't find anything in Wiki etc.
