Choke pull down.

Post by philiphuw »

Hi All.

I have tried and failed to locate a new choke pull-down unit from the usual sources. The one I have clearly has a perished diaphragm. Is there a way around this problem? Can you blank off the vacuum tube and adjust the choke flap using the tiny Allen screw to get roughly the correct opening when the engine is cold?

Thanks in advance.

I bought one recently from Gower and Lee. It is one for a Golf that has an extra port. A blanking cap is provided which I glued on.

Thanks for all the advice. Grower and Lee don’t stock the units any more. I have ordered a replacement from Joachim Hintersberger Aircooledshop in Germany for €47. Fingers crossed!

Have they actually sent it yet, I ordered one last week but had an email saying they're out of stock and refunding my PayPal account.

You were right Shepster. Just received my refund from Germany. FFS. Why can’t they list the item as out of stock? Anyhow, I have refitted the carb, blocked off the vacuum pipe to the faulty choke pull down and modified the sliding section so that, when cold, the choke flap doesn’t quite close completely. As the choke coil heats up the flap gradually opens fully as it should. The old girl starts on the first turn of the key and is smoother running than she has been for a while.
