Front number plate location

Post by TONYT25T25 »

Like most if not all, my front number plate is fitted to the front of the bumper. Which makes it vulnerable to damage if you get a bit to close to an object or when stepping on the bumper to get access to elevating roof. Is it possible to fit the number plate below the bumper and are special brackets required and is it road legal in this location.

I have read various articles, and they are quite open to interpretation.

The general idea is that they should be fitted on the vehicle (not inside the screen),

as close to vertical as possible, not tilted back.

And clearly visible when viewed from the front.

The obvious single shade of black text on a white background on the front plate. (Although not on older vehicles).

The correct font, format, letter size, and spacing.

But that is it.
You could mount it on the front of the body, above or below the bumper, and/or to one side a-la Alfa Romeo style.

As long as it can be easily read by anpr cameras etc.

Maybe one day I might get it finished

The wording in the regulations is:
Fixing of registration plates: vehicles registered before the relevant date
7.—(3) This paragraph requires each plate to be fixed—
(a)in a vertical position or, where that is not possible, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practicable, and
(b)in such a position that in normal daylight the characters of the registration mark are easily distinguishable, in the case of a plate fixed on the front of the vehicle, from in front of the vehicle and, in the case of a plate fixed on the rear of the vehicle or trailer, from behind the vehicle or trailer.

Thanjs Cliff, read the link but confused as to the description of the plate being in a vertical position. If it said horizontal it would make more sense, I must be getting my geometry wrong.🤔

Front number plate location

I think the intention is that the number plate should be fixed to a vertical, or near vertical, surface, rather than being mounted at the front edge of a largely horizontal car bonnet for example.

I think explanations and instructions are drafted sometimes with the author thinking that the readers are all technicians. Thankfully forums like ours break it down to a more understandable explanation.
