Coolant leak, 1.9 DG

Post by cocker »

Hi, I appear to have a slight coolant leak on my 1985 Caravelle, 1.9 dg.  A coolant pipe running from the thermostat housing to the offside cylinder block looks wet, rusty and coolant appears to be collecting on the mounting underneath. Am I right in thinking this is a two part pipe joined with a piece of tube or is this a repair?  Is it possible to cut this pipe and replace it with a piece of coolant hose?  I can see that the metal pipe appears to be crimped in order to fit in the space.  Has anyone had experience of replacing this pipe?  Cheers

Hi, Doesn't appear to be that one.  Mine doesn't have another connection coming off it.  It has an elbow off the thermostat housing, is crimped both sides to go over a projecting boss, goes under the pulley end of the crankcase.  The other end is an elbow off the offside cylinder block.  The two pieces are joined by  a tatty piece of coolant hose ( which made me think it was a bodged repair).  See photos,

sorry can't figure out how to insert photos and can't find out how.

Back to the pipe - The ones I've seen at JK and other suppliers don't seem to match what I've got.  Can't see where it's leaking because it's all too tight in there.  I may just have to take it apart and go from there.  Cheers.

Hi, ignore my previous post, I've found what I hope is the correct part.  It is a two piece pipe joined by a piece of coolant hose ( god knows what they were thinking)!  All I've got to do now is drain it ,flush it ,take it apart, re-fit it, fill it and hope it's fixed. Until the next time.  Cheers.

Oh, you meant water pump.
That'll be the lower one behind the pulley, across the oil pump cover. It's available in stainless, and there's a silicone hose available from Brickwerks (listed as "joining piece").
