'Fan belts'required

Post by wbmkk »

My battery warning light was showing, so I charged the battery, assuming that was the problem.

I was going to test the voltage but a friend (a retired mechanic) just happened to be returning home as I was at the van. After a quick chat, he informed me that the voltage might not be the problem .. the alternator belt is missing.

What !

yep, no belt. There's another belt below this one, which I think he said was for the power steering << is this correct ?

Where is the best place to buy these two belts please

thanks

On my 2.1 The 90A alternator belt is 1100x10mm The power steering belt is 1075x10mm. Any auto spares place should be able to supply them.

Not sure your belts will be the same as mine. Your remaining belt should have the size on it. I'm sure a diesel owner on here can help with the size of the missing one. A piece of cord around your pulleys should give you some idea of what you want.

PAS - 10 mm x 763 mm
Alternator/water pump - 10 mm x 910 mm

I am 99 % sure that is correct for your van ,ie 1.6 TD engine and power steering.

Don’t drive your van without the belt as the water pump is out of action !

The power steering pump is low down, below the alternator and has a separate belt.

Does the top belt drive the water pump ?

the reason I ask is that my neighbour who'll fit the belt for me still has his old garage with a lift, so he was going to fit the belts for me there. (7.4 miles away) The top belt is missing, but the lower one is still there .. My mate just said it was best to replace both, as the bottom one would have to removed anyway, to fit the top one

The water pump is directly below the alternator, and yes it shares the same belt that drives the alternator. You will have the pulley there ,with no belt on it at the moment (like the alternator). The power steering pump pulley is lower still and to the right.
This is a difficult area to photograph but I have shown with a red pointer the bolt which needs to be slackened to pivot the power steering pump to do the power steering belt which is not at all obvious or where you might expect it to be. Not easy to get to ,but I managed to do it from above.
The alternator/water pump belt could be easily done without taking the van to the workshop perhaps by cutting the power steering belt to remove it , then the van could be driven to the workshop without functioning power steering (and appropriate care) to finish the job. I do find the alternator belt needs quite frequent adjustment to to avoid slipping / screeching/
wear , especially when new. I also find the belt wears out quite quickly despite my best efforts to keep it adjusted correctly.
Are you up to date with the cambelt replacement ? if not now is probably the time to add that to the job .

Thank you very much Cecil for all your help.

That seems a good idea .. remove the bottom belt .. fit the top, then drive to the workshop to complete the work.

At least then the engine won't overheat.

Is driving without power steering difficult ?

The steering will be heavy, even compared to a non power steering van. Also when manovering avoid steering whilst stationary.

If I recall correctly, it should be possible to fit both belts from the top on a 1.6TD. The power steeering belt is a bit of a pig but doable.

Correct. If you cut off the PAS belt and do the alt/water pump belt you are more than half done.
