Just the design is different, so not required. For example, overhead cam inline 4 engines sitting upright have a well that the valve stem and cam follower sit in. This fills with oil which can be forced down between the valve guide and stem by positive crankcase pressure (breathing). In a horizontal pushrod engine this doesn't happen.

as said not needed due to valves being horizontal.

Aircooleds had them but they don’t do much, check guide and valve wear

When I removed the valves and cleaned the head I noticed that there wasn't any seals.
I assumed that there should be some and they were just another corner that had been cut during the life of the van.

After looking on various websites I was seeing seals for some T25's, but not for a CU.
I haven't found a 9mm one for any vehicle.
So, seeing as I can't get them and there wasn't any fitted when I stripped the heads I'm guessing it'll be alright to rebuild the engine without them.
Right? :?

I had a look around too,not trusting my memory. No valve stem oil seals on the CU engine or they type 4 engine it is based on.

There was a simple seal introduced on type 1/2 engines in the mid sixties, from what I have read. I'm grateful for what Andrew posted, he confirmed what I had worked out /thought, but as I wasn't sure didn't want to post anything. :)

The seals you have seen will be for the diesel engines - inline upright 4 pots

Yes, VW stopped fitting them in the mid 70's. They where to stop oil being sucked down the valve guides on the overrun with the throttle is closed.
