New Ignition Coil - still poor running

I replaced plugs, distributor & had carb looked at to try and sort poor running, van drove OK to start with but poor running returned followed by breakdown :(

RAC diagnosed bad coil so I fit a new one, again van drove nicely then poor running & stalling returned...I'm wondering what the problem is - new coil no good? ignition control unit problem? or maybe the wiring....any ideas out there?

Did you test the old coil with a multi meter. Knackered accelerator fuel pump, easy to check /change. All vacuum pipes secure. Filter clear?
I had similar last year and just had to plod through everything one by one. It turned out i had a selection of small problems and then after changing the ign' amp, perforated acc' pump diaphragm, adjusting the acc' cable, adjusting the cam to increase fuel delivery, replacing the ht leads and the vac advance it ran great. Two weeks later the coil went west so changed that and all was good. All easy to check and replace.

Can we assume you have eliminated this to be a fuel problem?
Because it sounds like one.

^^this^^
I'd say possible water in tank, or old fuel lines putting crud into the carb.

Let us know how you get on. Too many posts fizzle out without the conclusion posted on here. It helps others in the long run.

We had the same symptoms a few years ago. AA changed the coil. ran for 10 mins then stopped again. Turned out to be water in the fuel tank. It looked ok from underneath but the top had rotted out. Reasonably common problem apparently. I'd start there. :ok

Many thanks for the advice and sorry for not updating...I got a bit fed up with my van & thought about getting rid...Catch 22, tricky selling a van with problems, get them fixed & you want to keep it!! I looked at some T4 & T5 campers but don't like them as much, so decided to stick with this T25.....

I replaced the ignition control unit & so far the van has driven fine, not sure if that sorted the problem. We're planning a drive from Yorkshire to Somerset this weekend so fingers crossed!! I didn't check the old coil, i need to work out how to check with multimeter.. I ahd put van in for new fuel lines & filters but mechanic said they looked OK... With the new leads, distributer, coil, control unit & carb check I must have narrowed it down!!!

By the way, it's a DG engine, 1915cc unleaded.
Thanks again....I'll let you know if I we get to Somerset & back!!!

You can't be sure a fuel hose is good by looking at it, unless it's up to modern spec and you know it's the genuine article.
Ideally it says "FPM/ECO/AR/ECO" in blue on it, and it came from Brickwerks.
A lot of cheap stuff is marked R9 (or even old R6 spec) and can be fake rubbish that will perish in months, leaving you at risk of breakdowns at best, and your van on fire at worst. I recommend you double check those hoses...

Thanks aj, I'll probably have the hoses & filters sorted on vans next visit to the garage, maybe when MOT due...
But we got to Somerset & back this weekend, our van drove great, just a scare when the temp light started flashing but that was the sensor on the coolant bottle dislodging again.....

I think I can provide some closure on this, at that van looks very very familiar, maybe because it's parked in my drive now ;).

The poor running coulda been down to both the fuel filter being shot. ( thanks for the one you provided it saved my a***! ) and the fuel tank itself was blocked and a tad leaky. I woulda flushed it but with it being leaky I swapped out to a new tank, and redid the fuel lines.
The carb second stage accelerator arm was snapped so it wasn't running right. Put a new carb on as I couldn't be arsed to faff with the only one for now and it runs just fine.
