Chassis Rust

So i was removing more parts from the engine bay today in preparation for media blasting.
Last year i noticed this part of the Chassis was a "little" bit rusty:

This is the nearside chassis on an 84 diesel (incase it makes a difference?).

Luckily it wasn't an MOT fail, but does anyone have any pictures of what this part of the chassis should look like? My welding buddy will be helping me do some work in the next week or so, i'd like to tidy up this area.

Cheers.

The rust on the top side of the chassis leg starts with the air guide plate edge getting infected, if anyone can see it starting cut off the edge that sits on top of the leg before it eats away down into the chassis leg, the air guide isn't structural the chassis is !

I had a mate weld in a patch on the off side and painted it with hammerite. Make sure you wax the hell out of it once done - I bought some Dynax S50 with the lance and placed it into the holes:

In my picture i think i have an earth wire(?) bolted to the chassis, is this normal? I notice it's not on your's.

Really appreciate the photo's davidoft. I've bought a couple of panels from schofields to replace both sides.
They look like these:

But any other panels you have i'd be more than happy to take, the rear corners are pretty rotten on mine, i'll try and look for a photo.

Let me know what you have anyway.

Cheers!

Cheers 300CE, nice job. I've got some vactan anti rust primer to go all over the engine bay once I'm finished :D I will try and grab some wax too then.

What van is that? It seems to have an extra panel where the air vent is?
Is it a syncro?

Cheers for the kind words - she's just a bog standard Transporter mate so i'm sure the panel is normal......i think?!

Here's some details on the Dynax S50 - you can clean it up, Vactan and then Hammerite it and it should last a few years (this is the second time i've done the engine bay).

Diesel/petrol being the difference?

Must be, the battery tray would be there on a diesel too.

Cheers 300CE, i will have to get some Dynax S50. Is it good for the outer panels too?

I’ve pretty much used it everywhere - in the wheel arches, bottom of the lower panels, underneath the van etc. If there’s any rust, I usually vactan it first, let it go black and then coat with the dynax.
