gearbox

Hi all, I am in the process of buying another T25, its a German import so LHD. It is a 1900i with a 4 speed gearbox. It has been fitted at some point with a 5 speed gearstick. In 1st, 2nd and 3rd there is a wining from what seems like the bottom of the gearshift. 4th seems fine. Its also very stiff. The wining does not seem to be coming from the rear. Could this be because its the wrong gearstick?? Thanks in advance for and help and advise.
