You could always look in the wiki
http://wiki.club8090.co.uk/index.php/Co ... ht_on_dash
From there

Almost right, firstly the chips in the Level Sender Control Unit (LSCU relay 43, on the main fuse panel at the front on late vans but up under the dash on the A pillar near the crown of earths on early vans) )are VAG coded so no idea of what they are.

I can't believe how I missed that in the WIKI, I read that piece twice!
Anyway, I have just found it and above the earth crowns and I have the tall 43 relay in installed, the heart of the issue. Gonna change this right out!
Thanks for the patience and help!
ADMIN - Would a photo in the WIKI help people discover this location, it's easily missed on the early versions!

Result
If the Wiki is going to be updated for the photo, then I suggest it is also updated to refer to the three types of "relay" fitted, as contained in the Samba link

The thing is sometimes there can be too much text, a photo can cut through that!

Best organise a photo of the three types then - our wiki doesn't address you original question at all, text or image

Jst to clarify, of the three types of level sensor control units, neither the types 42 and 43 that are identical in size affect the temperature guage needle position once triggered. Type 42 has a slightly different duty cycle but there is no need to replace a similar size working type 43.
Worth remembering to periodically check that the LSCU is actually functioning by removing the level sensor two pin plug and waiting approximately 15 seconds after which timee it should trigger the temp gauge LEDi.
Apart from going short crcuit causing the temp gauge to go full scale they can go open circuit and not trigger the LED n the event of coolant loss.

That's my understanding too, here's the original Samba post which includes part numbers
crazyvwvanman wrote:The small "42" is the newest type, good for all year Vanagons and currently what is sold as new replacement. The small "43" is about the same as a "42". The taller "43" is the very early type part 251 919 376 and belongs in the trash.
The taller very early "43" pegs the gauge hot when the coolant is detected low, as well as blinks the led. The later types blink the led when coolant low level is detected but leave the needle reading engine coolant temps.
The smaller "43" is what came in 87 but works in all years. The smaller "42" came in 90 and later van and works in all years.

I went to my box of relays and found another "43" but double cube sized and is part number 251 919 376 (presumably out of an older vanagon) but I also found a "42" (cube) with part number 191 919 376A
which one is correct for an '87?
