5 speed gearbox filling

Morning All,

I remember from many years ago being told from local VW dealer and shown drawing , that when filling a 1984 5 speed box to fill to 15.mm below filler hole . Was difficult to judge when doing so, but hey ....
Is this statement still applicable today ?
Does everyone use this standard, or just to fill until Oil comes out from filler hole ?

Also is it possible to remove flywheel and replace seal without removing gearbox, yes I’ve read wiki !
CJH mentions a post from Covkid being able to do so .
I ask as I’m on my own with now a “glass back” , don’t want to get so involved and if my back goes I’m knackered !
Looks feasible to do and beats garage prices .
Atb,
Chris :ok

Fill it to the level of the fill hole.

There was a VW service bulletin regarding the "short fill", I suspect that it was to improve the cold gearchange in very cold climates.

Just make a dipstick up out of metal rod.

Thanks lads,

I thought I’d seen that update, will have a think about it .

No chance of draining or filling at the moment as filler is seized solid, soaked in Plusgas, carefully cleaned exposed threads and wire brushed with loads of Plusgas .
17,-mm plug socket unable to seat properly and was worried of losing plug profile .
Had a try trying to shock it to move with dull chisel and punches so far sweet FA .
Wall thickness of plug quite thin and unfortunately one flat folded over .
Anyway I’ll have another bash tomorrow .
Atb,
Chris

Use the proper 17mm male tool, a ring spanner and a scissor jack. It will slacken off (its a taper thread btw)

Use a bit of 24mm inner diameter metal tube around the plug to stop it spreading.

Going for a long drive to warm up the gearbox could also make all the difference.
