Oh no, not an oil thread.

Short version:

15W40 mineral is what most people use and what it says in the wiki
15W50 gives better oil pressure, especially when the outside temperature / oil is hot, ajsimmo recommended Titan to itchyfeet
I've just put 20W50 in mine, it's a summer van and I'm used to Aircooled

Mineral is fine, some people say using synthetic causes leaks, can't see that more standardised chain length makes something leaky myself, but there you are.

if your tappets are old sythetic can make the noisier, if new should be fine.

Please can you lovely folk confirm this is all correct. Rings 180 degrees opp each other and pistons installed all arrows point to flywheel.....

I would normally set rings 120 degrees apart from each other, but with the oil ring being a 3 piece I don't know, have a read of the instructions that came with them or wait for itchyfeet ? 180 degrees apart on the compression rings with the three piece oil ring does make sense though

On the pistons, this is the layout, looking from the top, arrows towards the flywheel as you say.

Many thanks, just checked and you are right! 3 piece oil ring needs to be 120 and then the end of each ring needs to be 120! Will pop out rotate and refit. My numbers on pistons were random but they will be in the same place when refitted.

At the moment they are fitted like this as the VW manual states....

Why do you need to remove the rings, you just need to rotate them in the groove ?

I'm just going on my own generic past experience, not done a WBX yet, but you are using different rings so the ring manufacturer instructions override the VW manual... I would say anyway.

The offset is there to minimise leakage / blow by

I have installed pistons in cylinders so need to remove to rotate rings.

Ok, re jigged all rings to this position as ring instructions state, would you just double check? Cheers!

That would be OK for number 3, but remember, your pistons are laid out incorrectly in that photo.
