I'm retired from it now but the most common question I got when servicing brakes was "Can you give me a quote?". I never could as you often find that you have to replace so much of the system to get back to anything approaching acceptable. What might have started out as a faulty caliper for instance, can quickly become brake hoses and whole sections of brake pipe. I won't even attempt to remove a rear drum without new wheel cylinders ready. Brakes are the one thing I still do myself for that reason. I have to be absolutely sure in my own mind that when I really need them most, they will do the job - and pass the MOT. I'm not sure I'd trust anyone else with that so I'm stuck with that job until I can train my son
