Petrol to diesel 1.9 to 1.6

Hi all.
I’ve had a good search on the forums but can’t really find what I’m looking for.
I’m looking at swapping 1.9 water cooled petrol with a t3 1.6td just for a little better fuel economy. Can this be done and how hard easy is it to do?
Or if there is a thread already open can someone link me up? I have tried to search but can’t any threads
