Got in a right pickle. Apparently my starter motor was in a right state and beyond the point of repair. According to the old boy in the local motor factor round my way. This has left me in a right predicament. Hardly got anytime between now and going camping in the van. But managed to order a cheapish new starter to collect in the morning and got the bush on its way to.

Im working on the drive the van is on axel stands at the rear. Am I going to be able to get to the bush and get it out like this? or can I risk fitting the new starter with old bush in place and then get it changed after the trip?
Any tips on getting the old one out and getting the new one in if I do find the time?

I'd be tempted to fit the starter without the bush but take it with you on your trip. The bush should really be soaked in oil overnight before it's fitted anyway, so take a small jar of oil with you. You'll also need a M12 tap to get the old one out.

Brickwerks advise that the bush should be soaked in oil for 24 hours before fitting, so that might make the decision for you. If you're short of time & don't want to get into a deeper pickle do the bush later.

Yeah I think I’ll be going with the fit it option and doing the bush later. I’m not going to have time to soak the bush so probably my only option at this point. Flipping rushing around is good for nothing

So I’ve got a replacement starter and the bush is soaking in oil. Old unit had one spade connection and the new replacement unit which appears to be exactly the same has 2 spade connections. What’s the spare one for? Anyone?

If electrically connected I think it's possible that it could be used for warning lamp or alternator exciter wire, but you only have one spade, so nothing to worry about.

The spare one is so you have one left when the original one rots off.

Job done.
Old bush came out with a m12 tap and some pulling, was still in good condition. Made a 2 inch timber block up stepped in with a dowel cut in at one end, that fitted nicely in to the new bush and gently hit it in. Starts up lovely now.
